Haiti - Security : A police officer assigned to the security of every woman candidate to the elections 2015

Thursday, Prime Minister, Evans Paul, proceeded to the opening of the "Workshop for validating the draft Law on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of the Violence Against Women". The Head of Government took the opportunity to unveil the measures taken in the Superior Council of the National Police for the woman candidates (8%) in the next legislative elections, by assigning a police officer to the protection of each candidate.

It was the occasion the Head of Government to welcome the partnership of different ministries and international partners involved in the development of this draft law, the Prime Minister Paul further stated that "we dream of a country devoid of all forms of violence, violations of human rights [...] fight against violence against women requires on the part of the state a set of rational actions aimed at creating a normative and institutional framework, able to prevent, prosecute and punish the say violence. The Ministry for the Status of Women and Women's Rights has shown, despite some difficulties, its willingness to meet its obligations.

That's why we work hard to provide the country with an appropriate legal framework to crack down with rigor, to stop the violence practices against women.

Know that your contribution brings a major tool for strengthening an environment conducive to respect for human rights [...]" encouraging the audience to think, propose, correct ideas for the 50th Legislature in order to validate this Act.

Two major points crystallize the role of the Ministry of Women and Women's Rights (MCFDF): identify and compile "all laws discriminating against women, for amendment or elimination; propose after discussion and consultation with the various entities organized, new laws, consistent with fundamental principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other national and international instrument for the protection of women."

Initiated in 2009, this draft law complements the laws on motherhood, responsible paternity and filiation, passed in 2013.
