Haiti - Elections : D-4, Message of Sandra Honoré

A few days before the election on August 9, Sandra Honoré, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti issued a message on the occasion of the elections 2015.

Message of Sandra Honoré :

"Ladies and gentlemen,

On August 9, will be held the 1st round of several elections, some expected for nearly five years. These elections are crucial for the immediate renewal of the people's representatives.

They are essential for the restoration of the institutional balance and democratic consolidation of Haiti in the long term. And, more importantly, they are essential to meet the aspirations of the Haitian people, your aspirations, for democracy, citizen participation, accountability and good governance.

Voting is a democratic right individual, allowing each and everyone to express their choice in peace and without intimidation or pressure of any kind. It is an expression of the sovereignty of the people and a citizen duty.

You are almost 6 million entitled to choose 139 parliamentarians on August 9, and 1,420 local and municipal government and a new president on October 25, with possibly a second round if necessary, according to the electoral calendar of the CEP to ensure the 50th legislature is installed January 11, 2016 and the transfer of power to a new president, is accomplished on February 7, as provided by the Constitution.

These elections will be an opportunity for Haiti to install, for a third consecutive time, a democratically elected president after two successive presidential terms of five years. This is the longest period of institutional stability that Haiti has experienced in recent memory. The continuation of this consolidation is essential for peace, security and socio-economic development in Haiti.

To date, all stakeholders have done their part to achieve this goal and to enable the organization of transparent, inclusive and equitable. The Provisional Electoral Council appointed in January,

took to grips with the complex task of organizing the largest electoral process that Haiti has ever known. The National Police of Haiti has set up a safety plan including the deployment of 7,000 police officers across the country, which will be supported by the United Nations police and military, if necessary.

The game is for you, I make this appeal to all citizens who have the right to vote, especially young men and young women and the disabled, to exercise your democratic right, going en masse to vote Sunday, 9 August Jwèt la pou nou. Mwen lanse yon apèl bay tout sitwayèn ak sitwayen ki gen dwa pou votè, sitou jèn mesye ak jèn medam yo, ansanm ak moun k ap viv ak yon andikap, pou nou ekzèse dwa demokratik nou lè nou ale an mas al vote dimanch 9 out la.

Your participation in large numbers and your decisions to make a cross on violence in whatever form it occurs, will be the opportunity for you to demonstrate, to definitively choose Peace and Democracy Patisipasyon nou an gran nonb ak desizyon nou pou nou fè yon kwa sou vyolans sou kelkeswa fòm li prezante, se pral okazyon pou n demontre nou chwazi definitivman lapè ak demokrasi.

Thank you".
