Haiti - Economy : Border closed by Haitian in Dajabon

Monday, union leaders of Ouanaminthe and other Northeast localities of Haiti have closed the border gate with chains, for several hours to prevent the conduct of binational market in Dajabón, causing significant economic losses to traders of both countries.

Paúl Alonso, spokesman of Haitian protesters said they have decided to prevent the passage of Haitian merchants on the market, because a truck loaded with sugar and other property belonging to a haitian businessman, was held in the Dominican customs area for several days.

Several Haitians in Dajabón, which had decided to cross the Massacre River or by going over the fence, were attacked violently with sticks by Haitian demonstrators.

After several hours of blocking of the weekly binational market, the Haitian authorities decided to partially open the door. An unfortunately too late opening, the majority of buyers had already left the area, affecting economically, traders of both countries.
