Haiti - Elections : $1M contribution by Trinidad and Tobago

Monday, to 5 days of elections in Haiti, at a ceremony in the office of the mission of the United Nations of Trinidad and Tobago, Trinidad made a contribution of 1 million US dollars to support the electoral process under way in Haiti, reaffirming its strong commitment to democratic consolidation in the country, essential for stabilization and sustainable development. Note that this is the first financial contribution from a neighboring Caribbean in the funds for Haiti's electoral process.

"My country is very grateful for this generous contribution of our Caribbean neighbor, for its support to this historic election process that takes place at a crucial moment for our country," declared Ambassador Denis Régis, Permanent Representative of Haiti to the United Nations.

"We owe all a lot to Haiti, which played a role in the Caribbean and beyond, encouraging other countries to fight for independence in past centuries," stressed the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary from Trinidad and Tobago Eden Charles adding "I have recently be witnessedof great progress in this neighboring country and I am pleased that Trinidad and Tobago can support the historic elections in Haiti."

"The generous contribution of Trinidad and Tobago reiterates the importance of intra-regional support for sustainable development and democratic governance," declared Jessica Faieta, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of UNDP, which, at the request of Haiti, managesthe fund and provide technical support to the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) in Haiti "It is essential to recognize the commitment and efforts of the Government and Haitian people to work to carry out this complex electoral cycle, in a serene environment, which is essential to restore the institutional balance and move towards the long-term development," concluded Ms. Faieta.

Recall that in addition to the contribution from Trinidad and Tobago, other Governments: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Norway, the United States and the European Union contributed with Haiti, to the financing of Haitian elections.
