Haiti - Elections : Michaëlle Jean encouraged the holding peaceful and inclusive elections

At the invitation of the Haitian authorities, Michaëlle Jean, Secretary General of La Francophonie sent a mission of information and contacts in Haiti, for the elections to be held Sunday, October 25, 2015.

This mission led by former French Minister Delegate for Cooperation and Francophony, Pierre-André Wiltzer is composed of parliamentarians, experts and leading figures from the Francophone world. Its mandate is to collect information on the voting process and evaluate the operations of the vote during the first round of the presidential elections and the second round of legislative elections.

"The electoral cycle underway in Haiti is a significant step in the process of consolidation of democracy and peace, in a context still marked by the painful memories of the earthquake that struck that country in January 2010" declared the Secretary General adding "The success of these elections, which will favor the emergence of stimulus conditions for growth and development of Haiti must be a common priority for all Haitians."

Michaëlle Jean urges political actors and civil society to promote dialogue and cooperation to ensure the holding of peaceful and inclusive elections and the acceptance of their results by all. She also encourages the international community to intensify its support for the efforts of Haitian authorities and actors in this area.
