Haiti - Elections : Deterioration of the election crisis, OCID appeals to patriotism 04/12/2015 11:11:25
The Citizen Observatory for Institutionalization of Democracy (OCID) takes note of the new developments in the electoral process and in the electoral environment, which tend to discredit once again the electoral apparatus and even more to undermine the minimum credibility that it remained to this process, to guarantee the feasibility of the second round of the presidential election and the legitimacy of all elected, that will out of the various elections held this year. The Observatory notes with great concern that, totally ignoring the implications of the decision of the BCEN on challenges produced by the two presidential candidates and numerous popular protests, the CEP published the final results and announced the opening of the electoral campaign. The OCID regrets this ostrich policy of the CEP, which will have much more weakened the electoral process in lack of credibility and led to reactions, that leave observers and public opinion strongly perplexed. OCID believes that the publication of the final results of presidential elections on 24 November was a hasty decision and uninspired with negative consequences for the continuity of the electoral process. The Observatory regrets that the Electoral Advisers have not taken the time to consult with stakeholders to find a consensual mechanism of purification of votes, in order to obtain a credibility boost, necessary condition to complete the electoral process and promote a minimum of legitimacy of elected. It wants to remind Advisers Electoral their constitutional obligation to hold free elections, honest, inclusive, impartial and democratic. It invites all stakeholders of the electoral crisis to put at the center of their priorities, the interest of the majority who live in unacceptable socio-economic conditions. OCID calls for the umpteenth time, to the patriotism of the members of the CEP and the authorities of those in power to convene an inter-Haitian dialogue with key stakeholders to negotiate a consensual solution to the current electoral impasse. It also conjures political opposition parties and candidates to respect for democratic rules in their protests, however legitimate they may be. Finally, OCID invites the Haitian population to remain calm and peacefully express their demands and to tolerate countrymen who have opinions and opposing interests.
