Haiti - FLASH : Sad Christmas, 115 road accident victims
The roads were particularly deadly in Haiti during Christmas (December 24 to 27), 54 traffic accidents, caused at least 115 victims, including 19 deaths, reports the National Ambulance Center (CAN).

According to the details provided Monday by Dr. Garnel Michel, Deputy Director General of CAN, most of these accidents are due to speeding, for driving while intoxicated, fatigue and lack of vigilance, adding that some victims are pedestrians and merchants on the sidewalk.

Thursday, December 24 :
14 accidents resulted in 17 victims including 1 death

Friday, December 25 :
18 accidents resulted in 67 the victims, including 16 deaths
The most serious accident occurred in the commune of Fond-des-Nègres, where 12 people were killed and twenty others injured following a collision between a bus that ensured the route Jérémie / Port-au-Prince and a minivan which left in the direction of Les Cayes. The same day another accident in Carrefour made 10 wounded.

Saturday, December 26 :
7 accidents resulted in 12 victims including 2 deaths

Sunday, Dece :
14 accidents resulted in 19 victims

Dr. Garnel Michel, stated that the CAN had prepositioned ambulances in areas deemed dangerous and expanded its staff during the Christmas period and that these provisions will be maintained for celebrations of the new year.

On his side the Principal Commissioner Godson Jeune, Director General of the Direction of the traffic service and the traffic police do not rule out the possibility that there were other accidents and victims in remote towns that have not yet been reported because of communication problems. He confirmed that arrangements have been taken to guarantee security during end of year festivities, but he admits not being able to ensure full monitoring on main roads due to understaffing.
