Haiti - FLASH : 212th anniversary of Haiti's independence, Speech of President Martelly
This January 1, 2016, the day of the commemoration of the 212nd anniversary of the proclamation of independence of our Nation, the President Michel Martelly in Gonaives issued before a packed crowd, his last speech as President of the Republic, we invite you to share some excerpts.

Excerpt from the speech of President Martelly :
"[...]

Gonaïviens, Gonaïviennes,

Haitians,

January 1 brings the time of a double celebration, the feast of the new year and the anniversary of the proclamation of independence of our country. On this occasion I say a double happy feast to all our compatriots whatever the place on earth where they are located. First, to wish them a happy and prosperous 2016 years but especially inviting them to immerse themselves in the memory of January 1, 1804, this important date of our illustrious past when our Fathers devoted their final victory over slavery and created to give us as an inheritance, a sovereign State.

I'm pleased to commemorate this January 1 of 212 years ago because that day, the union among the hearts and minds were wearing our Nation to the baptismal font.

It is thus to this sublime communion of souls, I want our country back. It is this unity that we must at all costs regain so that our Nation regains its triumphant march towards prosperity and progress. For too long, we have gone astray in the bitter and disastrous experiences of sterile fratricidal struggles. For too long we insists to fighting until we go into a stupid and blind fury, destroying part of the little we have. What will we leave as legacy and above all as example to our children if we do not stop this macabre and stupid game that engages our country backwards ?

I understand that the huge disparities in our society can sometimes create frustrations that lead to devastating despairs. But it is intelligent to give way to destruction pulses, which to the analysis provides only primary and childish satisfactions of the clean sweep for those who revel and in fact, further depleting the entire country. So it is more than time Haitians, that we wake up adult and mature and that we behave as responsible, conscious of our duties to the common Homeland.

I so understand it, that from the first moments of my presidency, I have invested unreservedly to shake up the heaviness that paralyze our people effort, in order to open the horizon of the future of Haiti to the breath of democracy, prosperity and shared progress for all his son.

Recognizing this imperative of continuous overtaking that stimulates our genes, it's through 5 theme of fights that I have schematically titled the 5 E that has exercised the presidential action.

[...]

Despite the pitfalls erected on my way and intractable oppositions, I kept myself tirelessly in my long march towards consolidation of democracy with the holding of presidential, legislative and local performed by an independent CEP.

The success of these elections is an important milestone on the road to stability of the country and the political transition February 7, 2016, a transition that I wish soothed, peaceful and democratic.

[...]

My sense of duty, sacrifice to my country explains why I gave myself so hard, with as much devotion during this five-year period for they are no more refugees of the earthquake of January 12 occupying unsanitary tents on our public places, so that there are no more children outside the education system, so that no more compatriots outside the employment network, of health care, decent housing, fair judicial standards. At the same time, are laid the foundations of the rule of law from which there is reinstalled confidence in our institutions and the attractiveness of our country was enhanced for investors.

[...]

Under my leadership, the full exercise of all rights and freedoms has not faced neither force nor fear and nor intimidation, which explains some deviations observed that came often disturb the peace public. As Head of State, I have always behaved as a true democrat and it is striking by that epithet with this basket of accomplishments that I have today to the assets of the Presidency, and I will present it to the court of history, because Haiti gradually changed [...]

Haitian people,

The day of 1 January we celebrate today is one of the most important dates of the country of Haiti, this anniversary should remind us all of the sacrifices made by our ancestors to give us this piece of land, where today we can live free, found a family raise our children with respect and dignity.

[...]

Today political crises, economic problems and natural disasters have already given us too much delay on the path which should lead us to development and democracy

For me it is very late, I would not not say it is too late, but it is very late, we spent so much time fighting, that all countries in the area have led the way on us.

It's very late, yes it's late... The day has come to unite us, to put our differences aside to show the world that we deserve independence that our forefathers gave their blood. The day has come for us to change mentality, that we used our strength and courage to build a new country, a country that the other peoples on earth can respect.

This fight we must do it together [...] let's work together for that development we seek and that we need, this development will not come from disorder in the blockades of streets... [...]

Yesterday December 31 I received two letters from the CEP, a letter where it sent the results of the parliamentary elections to publish them and another letter in which they explained to me that to respect the parliamentary entry of January 11 and the inauguration of the new President on February 7, elections must be organized no later than January 17, 2016, this week i will relase a decree inviting the people to vote Sunday, January 17, 2016.

I ask everyone to respect the rules of the game, I ask all fanatics and supporters to stay calm, I ask you to vote en masse as it should be, go vote for the person you think will represent you best .

I wish all the candidates good luck

[...]

I hope the next Parliament will do everything necessary to work with the next President, because it is not the empty chair policy, which means doing politics. The policy that is not block the projects, this is not do not pass laws which means doing politics [...]

It is necessary that all the powers are working together to put the country back on track and move it forward.

I wish a good year and a good Independence Day to all Haitians,

May God bless you,

Ayibobo pou pèp Ayisyen,

mesi anpil, see you"
