Haiti - Politic : OAS urges Haiti to reform its CEP
Friday, February 12, at its headquarters in Washington, the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) received the report of the Special Mission, deployed in Haiti in early February at the request of the Haitian Government https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-16441-haiti-flash-martelly-solicits-the-oas-as-mediator-in-the-crisis.html and recognized the contribution of the Mission to the achievement of an agreement on a transitional government and to advance democratic solutions in the country https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-16533-haiti-politic-the-details-of-the-agreement-from-a-to-z.html

Ronald Sanders, the Head of Mission has detailed the conclusion of the Mission and confirmed having been witness to the agreement reached by Haitian political actors https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-16536-haiti-politic-oas-satisfied-with-the-formula-found.html Under the terms of the agreement, the Parliament will elect an interim President for a period of 120 days https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-16595-haiti-flash-jocelerme-privert-provisional-president-of-haiti.html and will confirm a Prime Minister by consensus.

The second round of the presidential elections, the final step in the conclusion of the electoral process, will take place on April 24. "[...] We are pleased that the presence of this mission has had a positive effect in finding a consensus formula between stakeholders" stressing that "To move forward in a form acceptable nationally, the electoral process must be enhanced to inspire more confidence."

Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the OAS, abounded in the same direction, emphasizing on the "[...] need to improve the conditions of the electoral process and the electoral authority (CEP) to improve confidence necessary to get to the election of a new President of Haiti in April," adding "We absolutely need a robust electoral body in Haiti, with clear rules, the implementation of high consensus measures for ensure equity, public confidence and security conditions for the observers on the ground."
