Haiti - Epidemic : Caritas intensifies its assistance to victims of cholera
Caritas Switzerland is stepping up its action against the spread of the cholera epidemic in Haiti. It increases the amount of its aid to $600,000 and intensify measures in health care facilities and schools in areas particularly affected as the Artibonite. The Chaîne du Bonheur and the Swiss Development and Cooperation (DDC) participate in the financing of the aid program of Caritas.

Caritas boosts aid that began in late October, which consisted in distributing medicines, water purification tablets, serums, masks and disinfection equipment to the hospital Alma Mater and the seven care centers in the Artibonite region. The aid program also supports families directly affected.

Caritas distributed now, 6,000 hygiene kits and 2,000 water filters in the regions where the risk is highest. A campaign on the radio as well as information brochures provide preventive measures against cholera to the population. The DCC is directly involved in program funding amounting to $450,000.

Caritas Switzerland is also providing $150,000, so that 12 schools in the Artibonite region, can fight against the spread of cholera. Children will be informed of measures to prevent the possible spread of cholera. Schools will also receive drinking water. This project is coordinated by the Trou Sable school in Gonaives, an organization longtime partner of Caritas Switzerland.
