Haiti - FLASH : Carnage among police officers

In a detailed investigation report, covering the period from January 3, 2015 to March 18, 2016 (14 months) published this week, the Defense National Network of Human Rights (RNDDH), reveals that during this period 35 agents of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) were killed (34 gunshot and 1 with knives), and 37 were assaulted and injured.

Among the victims police officers, RNDDH has identified in particular 5 inspectors, 14 agents IV, 9 agents III, 15 agents II, 25 agents I.

The majority of police officers assassinated (33 of 35) were in the metropolitan area: Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Carrefour and Pétionville, or in remote communes such as Croix-des-Bouquets, Arcahaie, Grand-Goâve, Petit-Goâve, Ganthier, Gressier, etc... The other two police officers were killed in the Artibonite and the North of the country.

In most cases, PNH officers have been victims of armed attacks perpetrated by unidentified individuals aboard motorcycles traveling without license plates.

The report underlines that the judicial authorities do not seem concerned by this phenomenon of insecurity which is clearly increasing in the country. Many armed individuals involved in the perpetration of wrongdoing were detained by PNH and then quickly released by the judicial authorities, in suspicious circumstances.
