Haiti - Cholera Epidemic : The situation worsens at the national penitentiary 22/11/2010 08:15:29
The cholera epidemic that spread throughout the 10 departments, has affected the country's prisons where 13 people died in recent days, as reported by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The situation worsens at the National Penitentiary, the number of cases nearly doubled in a week. Marçal Izard, spokesman for the ICRC, said that 50 cholera cases are currently being treated at the National Penitentiary. She expressed fear that the epidemic is spreading quickly in prison because of overcrowding and lack of space to treat patients. The prison of Port-au-Prince home some 2,000 inmates, almost a third of all prisoners in Haiti.
