Haiti - Health : Irresponsible strike in hospitals

Medical residents among others at the Hospital of the State University of Haiti (HUEH), Hospital La Paix, Justinian Hospital in Cap Haitien, of the Maternity Isaie Jeanty and of Sanatorium Hospital are mostly on strike since March 28.

They demanded among others salary adjustments, more safety in their workplace where they are exposed to violence and sometimes armed threats, including by relatives of patients, of equipment and inputs to help treat patients etc...

However, all the proposals made so far to the strikers, were rejected mainly because of their intransigence especially on the improvement of their wage conditions, if they are legitimate, are not realistic given the state of finances of the States. Indeed, the strikers go from one extreme to the other, the residents who receive monthly 7,000 gourdes for their expenses demand nothing less that 80,000 gourdes per month and 120,000 gourdes for general practitioners !

Since the beginning of the strike, that threatens to join the nurses and the small staff, new patients are no longer received and those already hospitalized are facing enormous difficulties, almost abandoned without care...

Wednesday at the General Hospital of Port-au-Prince, a pregnant woman, died outside the institution, victim of a bleeding and unable to find a doctor to help her, a drama which took place near a demonstration of medical staff on strike...

At the Ministry one make know that the services could resume in public hospitals by the end of this week, hoping to be able to rely on other members of health staff...
