Haiti - FLASH : A house collapses, 5 dead and ten injured

On the night of May 4 to 5 to Thor 65 (commune of Carrefour) a house collapsed, five people died including a baby of a few months and is reported ten wounded removed from under the rubble, according to the Civil Protection Directorate of Carrefour. Firefighters deployed to the scene, continue the search for survivors in difficult conditions.

A tragedy that could have been avoided, in this house classified to demolish by the Town Hall, and the Ministry of Public Works after the January 2010 earthquake, which nevertheless continued to be rented for the past six years, for lack of authorities from leaders before the refusal by tenants to clear out, despite several eviction attempts.

On the order of Abednego Desruisseaux, the Director General of the municipality, the police arrested the unscrupulous manager of this dangerous house, which had previously received several warnings. A manager who is not at his first arrest and last time regained his freedom in less than 3 days...

Following this tragedy, the interim mayor, Reynaldo Brunet granted a period of 3 days to all tenants of listed houses to demolish to leave the premises, otherwise he promises them the expulsion...
