Haiti - Canada : Implementation of Mauril Bélanger scholarship program

As part of the establishment of a scholarship program for university studies, for the benefit of talented students of the Haitian community. More than 130 people, of the Haitian community of the region, as well as friends and invited personalities, paid a fitting tribute to federal deputy Mauril Bélanger (Ottawa-Vanier), during a benefit evening at the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO).

This fundraising event helped raise nearly $30,000, which will be added to the scholarships fund dedicated to students of the Haitian community. The scholarships will be named "Mauril Bélanger scholarship".

Besides Denis Harrisson, the Rector of the UQO, there were among the guests at this evening: Frantz Liautaud, the Ambassador of Haiti to Canada, Geoff Regan the President of the House of Commons, former minister and Liberal deputy, Don Boudria, the Deputy Greg Fergus (Hull-Aylmer) and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and economic Development, and Ms Mireille Apollon, Councillor for the City of Gatineau.

The initiative of scholarships for university students who come of the Haitian community, which was founded in 2012, was initiated following the January 2010 earthquake, by Mauril Bélanger [decorated by the Republic of Haiti of the National Order Grand Cross https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-16416-icihaiti-diplomacy-the-government-of-haiti-will-decorate-a-canadian-federal-deputy.html ] and Ms. Apollon.

This annual scholarship is awarded on merit by the Université du Québec en Outaouais (UQO) and the University of Ottawa (UO) [the community being installed on both sides of the Ottawa River].
