Haiti - Elections : CEP is pleased about the success of the elections !! 29/11/2010 16:25:24 The CEP President and its Director General, spoke of a "buckled and successful day" (?). According to them, only 56 voting centers on 1.500 have been affected by the irregularities reported during the day of Sunday and welcomed it (!). How to just four hours after the polls close, the CEP can have all the information in hand to support such an affirmation ? Moreover, in full contradiction, officials say during the press conference that another assessment will be made in 48 to 72 hours, when will be back the electoral advisers who are going in the regions, they will provide their reports on the elections in different geographical departments where they were deployed (which confirms that they lacked information to make that statement). Gaillot Dorsainvil, ruled out any possibility of cancellation of elections in response to accusations of fraud made by most presidential candidates (15). The request of these candidates was not taken into account by the CEP, which refers only minor incidents and blunders in its reports that are not likely to affect the credibility of the process. In short, the PRC is hiding behind two arguments:
Pierre Louis Opont said that nobody had prevented voters from exercising their voting rights... To a question regarding the fact that the names of many voters were on the list outside the polling station, and not inside, Philip Augustine, director of the electoral register said it was "a false issue" and that the two lists were identical, without giving the expected answer... Later, it is the people in charge of polling stations, which are accused of not read well and be the cause of these errors... where there are none... n summary, and various responses to reporters, CEP accusing alternately, voters to have been misinformed and to have wanted to vote in the wrong place which explains the absence of names on the lists... Or candidates who exaggerate the irregularities and frauds that concern only a small part of the elections... In conclusion, the CEP officials have argued that the elections took place normally and that the polls had closed at 4pm. They reported that the CEP intends to conduct the process through, by doing the counting and tabulation of votes until December 7, in a first time. Then the preliminary results of the poll will be released for the period for contestation of candidates. And on December 20 the final results will be published. The showdown is bound between the Préval Government, the CEP and the rest of the political class. Let's not forget a final point, the turnout. To have a future government credible and legitimate, this turnout must be significantly exceed 40%. Voter turnout for the moment remain largely unknown. However, we expect that this rate will be "very high" if it is necessary to serve a partisan cause. We await the report of the international observers impatiently. Should we laugh or cry? Should we see in these statements (outside of bad faith) evidence of incompetence of the CEP or the manifestation of a political trap run by the Government ? One thing is certain these justifications and confusing explanations and often contradictory not convince people. HL/ HaitiLibre
