Haiti - Agriculture : FAO promotes access to scientific knowledge in Haiti
Since 2003, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has set up an online global search system on agriculture, called AGORA. Its main objective is to facilitate access for developing countries, to a wide range of documents in areas such as food, agriculture, environmental sciences, social sciences, among others. Haiti is one of five countries in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean to have access to it for free.

A total of 2,900 institutions from more than 100 countries, 6,100 magazines and 5,800 books are already online and available on AGORA. This global digital platform aims to facilitate and democratize access to documentation for students, teachers, researchers and institutions specialized in the fields of agriculture and life sciences.

Note that access to information in Haiti is a major problem to the development of the country. Both at the levels of public and private universities, research centers, the specialized agencies of the Haitian public administration, the availability and access to information represent a challenge and a shortfall. This makes it difficult to achieve further scientific research in crucial areas, which has the effect of inhibiting the processes of social change and development.

The possibility for Haiti to have free access to this great global system of online information n, will facilitate the process of learning, teaching and scientific research on vital issues for the country, while allowing it to enroll in the era of the knowledge society and information.

This initiative is part of the "Research4Life" which includes three other global platforms of online research, including HINARI, OARE and ARDI. They all share the ambition to provide developing countries with free online access, or at low cost, to articles of scientific and professional journals and books.

Some Haitian institutions already have access to AGORA system, including FONHDAD, the Hospital Albert Shweitzer the ISTHEAH Institute, the Ministry of Public Health and Population, the State University of Haiti, the Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine, the Episcopal University of Haiti.

The FAO Representation in Haiti, invites all public and private actors, civil society organizations, public/private universities, students, among others, to use and ownership this important tool for sustainable development of Haiti, in terms of access to scientific knowledge and useful information.
