Haiti - Agriculture : New FAO Representative in Haiti

Chancellor Pierrot Délienne received the credentials of the new Representative of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Haiti, Mr. Nathanael Hishamunda which replaces Frits Ohler after 4 years of service.

As the new FAO Representative in Haiti, Hishamunda intends to consolidate the support of the Organization to the Haitian Government through effective technical cooperation in agricultural development policies and strategies, by improving food and nutrition security and resilience of households to climate change.

Mr. Hishamunda of Rwandan nationality, Engineer Agronomist of training, holds a Masters in fisheries and aquaculture and a PhD in agricultural economics he obtained, with great distinction, of the Auburn University in the US, where he also worked as a research assistant and teaching.

His brilliant and long professional career of more than thirty years is notorious. He was Head of the National Aquaculture Extension Service and Director of the National Aquaculture Service in Rwanda between 1984 and 1992.

n 1999, he joined the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the FAO in Rome. His expertise has helped strengthen efforts to promote and implement the "Blue Growth Initiative" and other development programs. He also contributed to policy development and the implementation, of programs and legal frameworks for sustainable development of aquaculture in over 25 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Before being appointed FAO Representative in Haiti, he worked since 2009 as Senior Officer (Aquaculture), at the

Division of Policy and fisheries and aquaculture resources (FIA), at FAO headquarters. His research and publications on economics, planning, governance of aquaculture institutions, food security, are known and recognized internationally.
