Sunday in New York, at a meeting with the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, the President of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela asked him to support the democratic transition in Haiti and its economy, in order to curb the massive influx of migrants from Haiti, traveling through Central America to the United States.
The two leaders discussed "the importance of paying more attention to the causes of these flows," informed the Panamanian government.
Ban acknowledged the humanitarian work of the government of Varela, for the crisis of migrants and refugees and sent a message to the international community on the importance of respecting the right to work in the host country.
"Migration is the new global problem. It will not be solved with the actions of a single country, but through joint actions of the international community, and we walk in that direction," declared Isabel De Saint Malo, the Chancellor of Panama in an official statement.
