Haiti - Politic : New distribution strategies of humanitarian aid

The Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Communities, from the National Emergency Operations Centre (COUN) informs that it has strengthened its distribution strategy of aid to those affected by the passage of the Hurricane Matthew.

Thus, since 48 hours humanitarian aid consisting currently mainly of tarpaulins, food, water and medicine is carried by sea and air through the communal sections of Nippes, South and Grand Anse.

This operation under the supervision the Haitian State is realized with the support of international organizations, which form a support unit to the departmental coordination of humanitarian assistance.

Maritime and terrestrial coordination is ensured by a joint team, which distributes the aid following a disaster mapping of departments to determine the communal sections to reach in priority depending on the vulnerability of the population, difficult access by roads and the level of impact of the hurricane on the area.

A fleet of two ships (the Pelican and Holland), 10 speedboats of the Dutch navy; 1 vessel (ARC7 AGOSTO), 1 helicopter of the Colombian Navy and 2 other helicopters are available to embark cargo and make deliveries in communal sections.

Operations security in targeted communities is ensured by the National Police of Haiti (PNH), supported by MINUSTAH and ship security forces.

On board each boat, two government representatives take part in the expedition to coordinate the delivery of humanitarian goods in different areas and, with the involvement of Mayors, the Boards of Communal Sections (CASEC) and Administration of Communal Sections (ASEC).
