Haiti - Humanitarian : Donation of more than $3M from Japan

Thursday Pierrot Délienne, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Yoshiaki Hatta, Ambassador of Japan to Haiti, signed a Grant Agreement for the Food Assistance Project (KR) 2016.

Under this project, the Government of Japan will make available a total of 350 million yen (± US $ 3 million) to the Government of Haiti as a grant. This amount will be used to purchase rice, which will be sold at a preferential price by the Monetization Bureau of Development Assistance Programs (BMPAD) in order to stabilize the local market and contribute to the food security of the population in Haiti following the passage of urricane Matthew, which severely devastated much of the country's agricultural infrastructure, causing worsening food insecurity.

Face this situation, the Government of Japan expressed its willingness to see this donation benefit the many affected families in order to avoid starvation and improve the country's nutritional situation at the same time as the development of agricultural capacities.

This support from Japan responds to the Haitian government's call to help the victims of Hurricane Matthew, while facilitating the stabilization of the price of rice on the local market.
