Haiti - Social : 157 illegal Haitians intercepted in Guatemala

The past week, in the eastern department of Chiquimula, the Guatemalan security forces intercepted 208 undocumented migrants, including 20 minors, whose 157 Haitians, 35 Senegalese and Congolese, 13 Brazilian, 2 Honduran and 1 Venezuelan. The Guatemalan National Police (PNC) said the group was found in Esquipulas, about 222 kilometers from the capital, which had been abandoned by their "coyote" (smugglers, human trafficker), were trying to cross via Guatemala to Mexican territory to reach the United States. After receiving assistance from the PNC, the migrants were taken to a detention center of the General Directorate of Immigration from which they will be repatriated to the country where they entered Guatemala.
