Haiti - Politics : Jovenel Moïse very interested by social programs in DR

On Wednesday, the Dominican Government shared with the elected President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, his experiences on several key social programs promoted by the administration of Danilo Medina including: "Extended school day", "Quisqueya Learning with you", " Quisqueya Start with you "," Progress with Solidarity ","Surprise Visits"," and "Solidarity Bank".

The presentation was made at the request of Jovenel Moïse who wanted to know more about these effective programs, which may serve as models in Haiti.

The presentation that took place in the Green Room of the National Palace was led by the Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo, who attributed the success of these programs to field workers, constant government supervision and social support. Each person in charge or the Project Manager presented the main lines of each of the programs.

"Extended school day" :

The Minister of Education Touched Andres Navarro presented the program "Extended School Day" which already has 3,804 centers, more than one million students and 24,000 teachers employed.

Then, Deputy Minister Denia Burgos stressed the benefits for students and their families like lunch at school. He said that at the moment, 1.5 million students are getting food, which makes their performances higher and generates less expenses at home.

Domingo Contreras, the Director of Special Programs of the Presidency, examined what is being sought and stressed that the aim was to try to make it an inclusive and legal policy.

Quisqueya Learning with you :

Horacio Medrano, Director of the "Quisqueya Learning with You" program, explained the importance of literacy for Danilo Medina's government. He said that in 3 years of implementation, they have managed to certify more than 455,000 people and reduce illiteracy from 14% to 7.5%.

Quisqueya Start with you :

Larissa Pumarol, who outlined the program "Quisqueya Start with You," said that this program is a model of care for early childhood, where emphasis is placed on health and education, among others.

Progress with Solidarity :

Altagracia Suriel, the Director of this Program presented its components explaining that it is based on social support, conditional cash transfers and public-private partnership.

Surprises Visits :

The "Visites Surprises" program attracted the attention of Haitian President. Deputy Minister Juan Pumarol explained that this program pursues a goal of proximity with the population. He said that President Medina, focuses on direct help from communities, to the promotion of associations and cooperation. Noting that there were 156 surprise visits, 952 commitments, more than 3 billion pesos financed and thousands of jobs.

For her part, Maira Jimenez detailed the achievements of the "Solidarity Bank" program, especially for unmarried women who receive special support for unsecured loans.

After listening attentively to the explanations summarized, Jovenel Moïse indicated that very soon his governmental teams will again visit the Dominican Republic to go further to observe and share the experience of these programs.
