Haiti - FLASH : Second day of violence in Petit-Goâve

Tuesday, for the second day, students from the lycée Faustin Soulouque, joined by high school students from other schools of the town of Petit-Goâve, took to the streets.

As on Monday, they demanded the resumption of the courses, paralyzed by a strike of teachers since early January https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-19888-haiti-flash-high-school-students-in-the-streets-violence-in-petit-goave.html who claim for some of arrears of salary and for others their letter of appointment... "As long as the problems of high school teachers are not resolved, no school in the city will be able to function," the demonstrators said, what was the case on Tuesday when the doors of almost all Petit-Goâve schools (public and private) remained closed.

In addition, high school students added to their claim the restoration of electricity, while the city has been plunged in the dark for more than 8 days...

Around 11:00 a.m., the demonstration, until then "relatively calm", degenerated on National Road #2 not far from Desvignes Street, when agents of the Departmental Unit of Maintenance of the Order (UDMO) have ordered the students to disperse, while throwing teargas grenades. The students replied by throwing stones at the police who fired several shots into the air, sowing panic...

By isolated small group, the demonstrators tried in vain to block the national road. No injuries was reported.

The officials of the Ministry of Education must take a quick decision to prevent the explosive situation from becoming worse with unpredictable consequences.
