Haiti - FLASH : The departure of the Minustah will not end the presence of the UN in Haiti
Hervé Ladsous, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, will lead a strategic assessment mission to Haiti next week as requested by UN Security Council Resolution 2313 (2017). During his stay he will represent the UN Secretary General at the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected President of Haiti.

The purpose of the strategic assessment mission is to develop a UN-wide understanding of the situation of the country through an overall assessment of the political, security, human rights, socio-economic and humanitarian situation.

The Assessment will identify the critical needs of Haiti and will recommend options for the future configuration and presence of the UN in Haiti to be presented in the next Report of the Secretary General due in mid-March. These options will inform the Security Council on the way forward, before the mandate expires on 15 April.

During his visit, the Strategic Assessment Mission will meet various stakeholders, including government officials, diplomatic corps and well as the UN Country Team."

t should be recalled that in October 2016, the Security Council called for a transition towards a future United Nations presence after the expiry of the mandate of the Minustah (15 April 2017), while asking the Secretary-General to present a strategic assessment, preferably after the inauguration of a new elected President in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18931-haiti-flash-mandate-of-the-minustah-unanimously-renewed.html
