Haiti - National Carnival 2017 : D-8, follow-up of preparations
Thursday, at a joint press conference, Jean Gabriel Fortuné, Mayor of the City of Les Cayes, Yvon Pradel, the Government Commissioner in Les Cayes and Mario Aubergiste, the South Departmental Director of the Haitian National Police (PNH), provided an updated of the preparations for the 2017 National Carnival, which will take place this year in the city of Les Cayes on 26, 27 and 28 February.

Police, judicial and municipal authorities want this great cultural event to be a success in terms of security. Zero tolerance and zero death, these are the objectives that these 3 powers have set themselves. Mayor Fortuné in addition to the reinforcement of the PNH announced that it will put at the disposal of the municipal police, 1.500 young people to help it to secure the Carnival.

Mario Aubergiste assured that the patrols will increase their activities before and during the Carnival including on tourist sites, adding that throughout the route, it is provided a strong police presence inside and outside of the Carnival activities.

Government Commissioner Yvon Pradel, for his part, said that exceptional measures had been taken to combat those who intended to disturb public order and that the law would be applied strictly.

The Organizing Committee has indicated that more than 750 hotel rooms (25% more than in 2012) and 280 houses (guest rooms) have already been listed.

Preparations are over 60% complete. The construction of the stands has started. No fewer than 115 stands will be built along the route of the parade (the same as for the Carnival of 2012) and the Coordination Committee ensures that everything will be ready on D-Day . There are spaces for the tanks; The 2nd entrance of Gelée will be asphalted to 80% and the 2nd main street will be rehabilitated. Minor repairs will also be carried out on the routre to the airport.

A dozen musical groups are expected but the list is not yet final, Boukman, Djakout #1, Rockfam and T-Vice have already confirmed their presence at the National Carnival 2017.

Mayor Fortuné stressed that positive impacts are already observed since 90% of all building materials purchases are made in the southern region and not in the Capital.
