Haiti - FLASH : Minustah calls on authorities to take urgent measures 21/02/2017 07:35:29
Sandra Honoré, Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UNSG) and head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), reiterates her deep concern over the deaths of 42 detainees since the beginning of 2017, linked to the aggravation of cruel, inhuman and degrading conditions of detention https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-19870-haiti-flash-new-wave-of-deaths-at-the-national-penitentiary.html
"The recurrent lack of food and access to medical care combined with overcrowding, confinement and poor sanitation and hygiene are unacceptable https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-20013-haiti-flash-nightmare-at-the-national-penitentiary.html . The Mission recalls that it is the responsibility of the State to ensure respect for the rights of prisoners and access to basic services.
Despite the many calls made by the United Nations, the Government is slow to take appropriate and sustained action to combat this problem. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations reiterates her appeal to the Haitian authorities to take urgent measures in response to this situation."
