Haiti - Politics : Haiti for the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

As part of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Tlatelolco in Mexico City, Guy Lamothe, Ambassador of Haiti, in the presence of Mexican President Pena Nieto, intervened to recall once again the serious consequences of the use of nuclear weapons on the populations, that led to the signing in 1967 of the first multilateral treaty in the world, creating a nuclear-weapon-free zone in a populated area in Latin America. Recall that Haiti signed this treaty on 14 February 1967, which was ratified by Parliament on 23 May 1969.

Extract from Ambassador Guy Lamothe's intervention :

"[...] Mr President,

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the Treaty of Tlatelolco is a highly historic event, giving us the opportunity to become aware again of the harmful consequences of the use of nuclear weapons on human life in particular.

The determined commitment of the Latin America and the Caribbean region to nuclear disarmament has certainly led other regions to thorough and continuous reflection, with a view to gradually achieving total denuclearization. Thanks to our leaders of the 70s, our region has undoubtedly become a model.

I would like to pay tribute to the visionaries who contributed to the creation of this treaty, which brings us all together today to the Mexican Chancellery, to consider other prospects, leading to our common goal, the elimination of nuclear weapons [...]"
