Haiti - FLASH : René Garcia Préval passed away this Friday

Former President René Garcia Préval died this Friday morning at the age of 74 (17 January 1943 - 3 March 2017) following a Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA). Prime Minister in 1991 (13 February 1991 - 11 October 1991) under the presidency of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, he went into exile in September of the same year during a military coup perpetrated against the Head of State.

He was the President of the Republic from 7 February 1996 to 7 February 2001, and during a second presidential term from 14 May 2006 to 14 May 2011.

It should be noted that René Garcia Préval remains the only Haitian Head of State to have completed two terms since the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier in 1986.

"I learned with sadness the death of former President René Préval. I prostrate before the remains of this worthy son of Haiti," reacted the President of the Republic Jovenel Moïse.
