![]() Haiti - UN : Increase of foreign troops in Haiti ? 06/01/2011 09:25:05
Mr. Barbalić summarized the difficult political situation in Haiti, following the publication of preliminary election results of November 28, 2010, which led to accusations of fraud, the challenging of the results, and violent protests across the country. He recalled that the second round of elections in Haiti originally scheduled for January 16, 2011, will probably be postponed because of the ongoing verification process and that it was important to look at the situation on the ground in a political perspective. To this end, the Permanent Representative, said that on January 20, the Security Council would hear a briefing on political developments in the context post-electoral on the basis of which he could have to consider an increasing of the troops of UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (MINUSTAH). "It is the duty of the Council to ensure the proper functioning of the Mission, and this, in the interests of all Haitians" he says.
