Haiti - Economy : Poor economic results in the first fiscal quarter
The Global Economic Indicator Index (ICAE), base 100 in 2007-2008, reached 143.5 in the first quarter of fiscal year 2016-2017 (October - December 2016), compared with 142.6 compared with In the first quarter of the previous year, thus showing a weak year-on-year growth of 0.6%. This slight result was the result of the decline in the Primary sector, while the secondary and tertiary sectors showed some progress.

Primary sector :
In the first quarter, the ICAE of the primary sector declined by 6.5% in the first fiscal quarter, compared with the same period last year, when it showed a strong increase of + 7.3%. This underperformance is consecutive to the decreases in the agricultural sector (-6.2%) and mining activities (-18.2%).

The decline in the index of the agricultural sector of -6.2% on an annual basis, according to the National Coordination of Food Security (CNSA), could be explained by a reduction of almost 33% of the agricultural production capacity in the departments most affected by Hurricane Matthew at the time of the winter campaign.

The sharp decline in the index Extractive Activities in the first quarter -18.2% in annual rate, in contrast to the increase of 5.5% from the same period last year is attributable to the fall in construction activity.

Secondary sector :
In the first quarter, the ICAE of the secondary sector recorded a sharp slowdown in the growth rate + 1.4% year-on-year, compared with + 6.6% for the same period last year. This weak growth is mainly due to the upward trend in manufacturing industries, which fell to 179.1 in the first quarter compared to 176.6 in the same period last year. This positive variation is the result of the behavior of the branches composing the manufacturing sector. Indeed, the Food and Beverages, Paper, Publishing and Printing and Non-Metallic Minerals subsectors have been on the rise; On the other hand, the other sub-branches: Textile, Chemicals, and Metalworking showed a downward trend.

The Construction sector index in the first quarter decreased by 3.1% year-on-year, compared to the 10.6% increase recorded in the same period last year. This negative trend is consistent with the decline in consumption of certain building materials and labor observed during this quarter.

Tertiary sector :
In the first quarter, the ICAE of the tertiary sector, valued at 145.7, showed a moderate year-on-year increase of + 1.2%. This reflects a decline in the rate of growth, taking into account the 4.5% increase recorded during the same period last year. With the exception of Financial Intermediation Services, the increase in this quarter is supported by all the branches attached to the tertiary sector.

The Index of Commerce branch in Q1 has experienced, in annual rate, a low risen by + 0.4% compared to the 1st quarter of the previous year where the growth rate was + 2.3%. The small increase observed is due to the differentiated behavior of the components of this branch. Informal trade has increased, while formal trade has declined.

The Restaurant and Hotel Index grew year-on-year by + 9.3% in the first quarter, compared to a decrease of -15.5% in the same period last year.

The Transport and Communications branch index grew by 2.5% in the first quarter compared with + 8.1% in the first quarter of the previous year.

The Financial Intermediation index fell by -7.5% in the first quarter compared to a significant increase of + 16.2% in the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. This decrease is mainly due to a decrease of "Other Revenues" in the commercial banking sub-sector.
