Haiti - Diaspora : Extension of TPS, US Senator Campbell alarmed

Senator Daphne Campbell (Democrat, District 38), representing the community of Little Haiti in Miami, Florida, strongly criticized the extension by President Donald Trump's administration of the Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants of only 6 months and not of 18 months as the TPS advocates hoped.

Senator Cambell recalled that some 58,000 Haitians benefited from the TPS program, and many of them settled in southern Florida, claiming that the deportation of these Haitians could devastate temporary residents and their families.

Campbell says Haiti is still rebuilding after the 2010 earthquake, the cholera epidemic and Hurricane Matthew and is not ready to receive tens of thousands of deportees.

"So what are they going to do in Haiti ? What about if they don’t have no family members anymore ? No family members, nowhere to go, no place to live, no job ! What they gonna do ?" asks Campbell "What are they going to do... ?"

According to the current schedule, Haitians benefiting from the TPS, could be expelled to Haiti from January 22, 2018, if no further extension takes place.
