Haiti - Agriculture : Hugo Plus, a new variety of maize seeds in Haiti
On Thursday, a new variety of maize seed called "Hugo Plus" was introduced at the Bas Boën Rural Development Center (Latremblay 17, Route de Malpasse Ganthier).

With the support of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), the "Feed the Future Haiti Chanje Lavi Plant" project has launched the distribution of 30 metric tons of Hugo Plus maize seed to the Agricultural Input Stores (BIA) selected in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, which will sell these seeds to farmers participating in the summer crop season 2017.

With this improved variety of maize seed, farmers can produce up to 7 tonnes per hectare when using best practices for planting in irrigated areas. Recall that in traditional cultivation, Haitian farmers produce less than one tonne per hectare using grains instead of improved seeds As an open-pollinated (OPV) variety, Hugo Plus maize seed can also be multiplied for future campaigns.

The project "Chanje Lavi Plantè" launched in 2015, https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-14633-icihaiti-agriculture-launching-of-the-project-chanje-lavi-plante.html will provide vulgarization services to small farmers with agronomists and peasants popularizers during the campaign, providing support from planting to processing and to the marketing of agricultural products.
