Haiti - Politics : Unanimous condemnation of death threats by Mayor Fortuné

The reactions are multiplying to denounce and condemn the death threats that the Mayor of Les Cayes, Jean Gabriel Fortuné has uttered several times in several media against journalist Jean Nazaire Jeanty, of the station "Lebon FM", for having realized a report in which he denounces the insalubrity of the beach Gelée to less than 15 days of the patronal festival.

In a note of protest the Association of Haitian Journalists (AJH), said to see through these threats, "a certain nostalgia of Mayor of the Cayes of a bygone era and rather sad in the history of the country." The AJH recalls that this era was marked by the use of secret services, as proposed by Mr. Fortuné, to enable the authorities to decide the life or death of citizens.

Frantz Duval, President of the National Association of Haitian Media (ANMH) said he was "appalled by the virulence of the words of the Mayor of Les Cayes" and denounced "a serious slippage" and "unspeakable behavior". He deplores the silence of the judicial authorities of Les Cayes on this issue and calls on them to assume their responsibilities.

The Association of Independent Independent Media of Haiti (AMIH) also condemned the death threats against journalist Jean Nazaire Jeanty.

"The Association of Independent Independent Media of Haiti condemns with the utmost rigor the death threats uttered by the mayor of Les Cayes Jean Gabriel Fortuné against the journalist Jean Nazaire Jeanty [...] it condemns the impertinence of the mayor who reiterated his threats on several radio stations in the capital, giving the impression of having the right of life or death on the journalist "why should not he die if he dared to criticize the unhealthiness of the Beach of Gelée ?" a statement by the mayor that is worth a call to the assassination and shows that Gabriel Fortuné has no respect for life.

The Association calls on its members, journalists from Les Cayes and the rest of the country, and the press and media associations to remain united to force Mayor Fortune to apologize to journalist Jean Nazaire Jeanty.
