Haiti - Football : Haiti - El Salvador, risk of cancellation because of cholera ? 25/01/2011 12:02:09 The Ministry of Health of El Salvador, recommended yesterday to the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) to postpone the scheduled match (February 9) due to the outbreak of cholera affecting Haiti. A spokesman for the Ministry, has confirmed that the Health Minister, Maria Isabel Rodriguez had made this request, in order to avoid the risk of spread of the disease in El Salvador. The reasons invoked are the impossibility to "control" the Haitian players and the contacts they will have on the territory, and the difficulties to detect the asymptomatic cases (1) of those infected by the bacteria "Vibrio cholerae". The spokesman added that if the match can not be postponed, the Ministry recommends a "strict control" of players and haitian management staff. For its part the Salvadoran Football Federation has informed had not taken any decision regarding the suspension of the match and that the programming was maintained at the time. A reaction from the Ministry of Health a bit excessive ... Since the beginning of the cholera epidemic, Haiti has already played outside the country without being threatened to be dismissed due to cholera! (Caribbean Cup 2010 in Group F, Martinique). (1) Only 25% of people with cholera have symptoms. The other infected people are asymptomatic carriers of the virus (without reporting symptoms) and can infect others without knowing it. Thus in Haiti, on the 200,000 cases detected and treated close to 600,000 others are asymptomatic carriers, potential vectors of disease across the country.
