Haiti - FLASH : Government and PM condemn...

In a note on the demonstrations organized in Port-au-Prince on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 September 2017 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22098-haiti-flash-violent-protest-against-the-budget-and-the-head-of-state.html the Government condemned "with the utmost firmness the acts of violence orchestrated on public buildings and on private buildings. These acts have also reached the property of peaceful citizens, significant investments in the country and even embassy premises. These agitations are capable of jeopardizing hundreds of jobs, discouraging investment, weakening our external relations and slowing economic growth. While recognizing the right of every citizen to peacefully demonstrate in accordance with the norms and principles established by law, the Government wishes to make it clear that these acts of violence can not be tolerated wherever they come from and reassures the population that the security forces have been instructed to take steps to ensure the safety of lives and property [...]"

The Government invites the population "not to be manipulated, to play the game of destabilization agents and urges all actors involved to take the path of dialogue and compromise."

On Wednesday at the Primature , Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant, at a press briefing, also condemned with the utmost firmness the violence that occurred the day before, during demonstrations in the metropolitan area.

The Head of Government recalled that justice will be exercised against the perpetrators of these unacceptable acts aimed at disturbing public order and peace.

He appealed to the people, to calm and serenity while affirming that "provisions are made to ensure the safety of lives and property and allow citizens to quietly go about their occupations [...]"
