Haiti - Elections : The BCEN in the final straight... 29/01/2011 14:29:02
The National Electoral Challenges Office (BCEN), the court of last resort in the electoral disputes, looks like an anthill since Tuesday. All day long it is a continuous coming and going of the candidates and their lawyers... Two courts of 5 members including 3 electoral advisers and 2 lawyers of the CEP operate simultaneously to process the 105 appeals filed by candidates. As of Friday, 70 appeals were heard and 60 judgments had been rendered according Richardson Dumesle, BCEN spokesman. No date has been set for the end of the contentious phase for the appeals in relation with the legislative elections nor for the appeals from the three presidential candidates, Michel Martelly ("Repons Peyizan"), Charles-Henri Baker ("Respè") et Jude Célestin (INITE). However, given the Schedule published by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) which announces the publication of the results on February 2, all of these cases will be heard and decided no later than Monday.
