Haiti - UNESCO FLASH : Raoul Peck asks Haiti to withdraw its support for Qatar's candidacy

While UNESCO is in an election period to replace its Director General, the Bulgarian Irina Bokova and that the Qatar candidate Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kawari, 69 years old and of France Audrey Azoulay 45 years were tied Wednesday during the 3rd round of vote, the Director and former Haitian Minister of Culture Raoul Peck, asks in a note to President Jovenel Moïse to withdraw his support for the candidature of the representative of Qatar.

Note by Raoul Peck :

"In the context of the elections to the Directorate General of UNESCO, the Haitian authorities would have given their voice to the Qatari candidate. Diplomatic negotiations and geopolitical arrangements can not overshadow the fact that Qatar remains a suspected state of massive human rights violations against its population and migrant workers.

This positioning is at odds with the values promoted by UNESCO, which are humanistic and universalist.

It would therefore be regrettable that Haiti, which still struggles for equality, freedom and democracy, entrusts its voice to a State that so often mistreats these ideals.

I solemnly ask President Jovenel Moïse not to support the candidature of Qatar."
