Haiti - Politic : The Government yield to the pressures of customs officers
Following the truce accepted by the customs officers strikers https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22349-haiti-politics-customs-officers-accept-a-truce.html and in order to avoid a further national customs paralysis scheduled for October 23, if the demands were not satisfied, Jude Alix Patrick Solomon, the Minister of Economy signed two days before the truce deadline, two protocols of agreement with two entities of the General Administration of Doaunes (AGD): the Haitian customs officers think tank (CRDH) and the Haitian customs union association (ADH).

It should be remembered that customs officers demanded improvements in working conditions, demanded a significant wage increase and a special status in the same way as police officers, because of the importance of their mission and their responsibilities: fiscal, economic.

In this agreement, the Ministry of the Economy is committed to grant several non-wage benefits to various members of the staff of the AGD and a salary adjustment from next 1 October. In addition, the Ministry also undertook to finalize, within a period not exceeding 90 days, the specific status of the customs officer that will come into force, according to the agreement, at the beginning of the fiscal year 2018-2019. New status which will result in a specific salary increase over a period of 2 years.

For their part, the members of the two entities have separately pledged not to strike and to facilitate decisions to improve the working conditions of customs agents and staff of the AGD.

It took the customs agents after 8 days of ultimatum 2 days of strikes https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22268-haiti-economy-customs-officers-give-8-day-ultimatum-to-authorities.html followed by a truce https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22349-haiti-politics-customs-officers-accept-a-truce.html to yield the government and get satisfaction on most of their claims.

It should be remembered that customs revenue is the first item of the Treasury and that any paralysis of this sector has considerable consequences, both for the State and for the country's economic activities.
