Haiti - FLASH : Illegal young Haitian students in Guyana threatened with deportation

While French Guyana is facing an unprecedented wave of illegal migrants in the past 3 years: 11,000 asylum seekers, more than 88% of whom are of Haitian descent, this massive migration affects the school system in French Guyana. Remember that under French law all children of school age living in the territory (legal and illegal) should benefit from free and compulsory schooling. However, in this country there are several thousand children of foreigners from 6 to 16 years old who do not have access to school, the school infrastructure is already largely insufficient to accommodate even the local population...

It seems that French Guyana, in defiance of the French law which guarantees the access to the education to any child of school age living on the French territory (legally or illegally), decided to go after the young foreign irregular migrants who are in school to prohibit them the bread of education and proceed further to their expulsion. Young migrant school children are now living under the constant threat of being deported to the borders...

Not knowing what to do these young people are hurrying to the permanence of the Network Education Without Borders (RESF) of Cayenne to seek help and advice...

The next step that awaits them will be an obligation to leave the French territory, a one-way trip to their country of origin...

According to the organization "SUD Education Guyane" « Despite its repressive policy against foreigners, despite its racism more and more uninhibited, French Guyana, the only French territory of the South American continent, remains perceived as an Eldorado by the poorest people in the world...»
