Haiti - Politics : $55M from IDB for agriculture and agroforestry

After announcing this week a first donation of US $ 8 million in support of the census https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22584-haiti-politic-more-than-$30m-for-the-next-census.html then another 65 million to improve drinking water and sanitation services https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22580-haiti-social-$65m-from-idb-for-drinking-water-and-sanitation-services.html the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a third grant of $55 million for agriculture and agroforestry. With this third grant, Haiti will benefit in total for these 3 projects from a grant of $ 128 million.

With this grant, Haiti will soon be able to rely on new technologies to develop the agricultural and agroforestry sector, improve productivity and increase food security.

The Program for Technological Innovation in the Agricultural and Agro-forestry Sector in Haiti (PITAG) has the general objective of increasing income and food security for small-scale agricultural producers in Haiti. More specifically, the program aims to increase agricultural productivity by improving the use of natural resources, through the generation and transfer of sustainable agricultural and agroforestry technologies.

The new project will help raise farmers' revenues and food security in selected areas. To this end, it will promote the creation and adoption of innovative and sustainable agricultural and agroforestry technologies. Additionally, the program will finance applied agricultural research programs to help with the transfer of know-how to small producers.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR), the main executor of the project, will also benefit from institutional strengthening through the Directorate of Innovation.

The Bank's donation will be added to contributions from other partners such as the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP), which will finance $10 million, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which will contribute $11 million. The Government of Haiti will finance $1 million to cover recurrent costs.
