Haiti - FLASH : Renewal of TPS uncertain, 58,000 Haitians at risk of expulsion from the USA

This week, within 80 days of the expiry of the 6-month extension of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, set for January 28, 2018 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21016-haiti-flash-tps-extension-for-6-months-official.html Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Elaine Duke, Acting Chief of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), said that the economic and security conditions in Haiti no longer require that the 58,000 migrants remain on American soil.

However, a spokesman for the State Department said that no decision had yet been made and declined to comment on possible inter-agency internal deliberations. Recall that Elaine Duke must announce a final decision by the end of November, the US law requiring this decision to be announced at least 60 days before the expiry date of the TPS.

Note that at the end of last September, Sharon Scheidhauer, spokesperson for the US Citizenship and Immigration Services had already warned "[...] beneficiaries are encouraged to prepare to return to Haiti in the event that the designation of Haiti is not extended, including requesting up-to-date travel documents from the Government of Haiti [...]"

Nothing very encouraging for our compatriots living in the United States under the TPS status, although there is still some hope thanks to increased political and diplomatic pressure. However, there is a serious fear of President Trump's lack of empathy for the cause of migrants, whatever their origins...
