The army of the Dominican Republic announced earlier this week the strengthening of surveillance at the border with Haiti and the sending of 236 new soldiers.

The measure was taken to combat trafficking among others of : illegal migrants, weapons, drugs, stolen vehicles and food, said José Joaquín Valenzuela, the Director General of Education, Trainingand Military Training of the Army. In addition he stressed that soldiers, including senior officers were "duly trained" to deal with any situation that might occur in the border area.

For his part, Roberto Sosa, the commander of the 10th Army Battalion in Dajabón, explained that the new soldiers will strengthen the work done by those who are in the northern part of the Dominican-Haitian border.
