Haiti - Social : New recommendations to improve food security

Following the series of technical workshops conducted in recent months in several departments, on the functioning and governance of the Food and Nutrition Security (SAN) sector in Haiti, organized by the National Coordination of Food Security (CNSA), of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP), representatives of various institutions working in the sector including the NSA, UN agencies, governmental bodies, NGOs, have agreed on the need, inter alia, to :

i) Strengthen CNSA's capacity to coordinate emergency food security activities at the local level;

ii) Train CNSA executives and technicians on communication tools and techniques to improve their ability to work with other institutions, particularly in the event of a crisis;

iii) Work in collaboration with the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) nd the Departmental Emergency Operations Center (COUD) in order to establish a permanent multi-sectoral structure in which will participate the actors whose activities have an impact on food safety ;

iv) Train Government and Local Government executives on the basics of food security, coordination tools and techniques to enable them to fill coordination gaps in times of crisis;

These recommendations addressed to the CNSA will enable it to strengthen the governance and coordination mechanism of the SAN sector, with the support of the various actors and partners concerned.

The technical and financial partners who participated in the workshops were able to share their experiences, identify the lessons learned on emergency preparedness and make an inventory of the challenges, opportunities and perspectives of SAN interventions in Haiti. A roadmap for better preparedness for possible emergencies, involving local authorities, civil society organizations, and Departmental Operational Coordination, was also developed.
