Haiti - Security : Results of the 2017 Hurricane Season, Haiti lucky

Following the end of the hurricane season (last November 30th), PROMODEV (Promotion for Development) underlines in its report of the season that the North Atlantic basin, particularly the Caribbean region, experienced a very active season that has generated powerful destructive hurricanes.

Indeed, with 10 hurricanes, of which 6 have reached or exceeded category 3 (major hurricane stage) and two have reached category 5 (Irma and Maria) the 2017 season in the Atlantic basin has proved to be well above normal over the past 30 years whose the average is 6 hurricanes and 2 majors, ranking the 2017 season in the Top 10 most active seasons.

The peak of the season was clearly established in September, when cumulative cyclone energy broke a monthly record almost four times higher than normal (1981-2010 average according to Philip Klotzbach).

The 2017 hurricane season will undoubtedly remain the most destructive in both the Lesser Antilles and the Greater Antilles with totally devastated islands (some uninhabitable, dozens of victims and billions of dollars in damage).

Haiti was fortunate to have a hurricane season 2017 without much damage to its level of vulnerability, while the North Atlantic, especially much of the Caribbean region, has been through a very strong hurricane season powerful and devastating, probably the most active since 2010.

Let's remember that at the beginning of September 2017 the hurricane IRMA category 5 happily passed to the North of the Haitian coasts, the rain causing however many damages to infrastructures and to agriculture https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22089-haiti-irma-situation-report-4.html

Two weeks later, Hurricane MARIA also spills Haiti, the rain causing many indirect damages but only 3 victims https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22185-haiti-flash-maria-has-made-3-victims-in-haiti.html https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-22154-haiti-flash-hurricane-maria-in-category-4-haiti-in-pre-alert-yellow.html
