Haiti - Insalubrity : 9 mayors of the metropolitan area call the authorities to dialogue

Considering, among other things, that for decades the Haitian State has failed to provide urban and rural communities with decent sanitary conditions despite the creation in 1983 of the Metropolitan Solid Waste Collection Service (SMCRS), setting out the responsibilities of the various instances (Town Halls: sweeping and SMCRS: pickup) for the protection of the environment. That the fatras constitute a scourge and a health hazard that puts the mayors in an extremely delicate situation vis-à-vis the inhabitants of their respective commune, which despite the legal responsibilities of the SMCRS as for the collection of garbage, put mainly in question the responsibility mayors...

Tuesday, January 9, in a joint declaration 9 mayors of the Metropolitan Region : Jude Edouard (Carrefour), Jean Hislain Fréderic (Cité Soleil), Rony Colin (Croix-des-Bouquets), Wilson Jeudy (Delmas), Dieulie Augustin (Gressier), Eunide Amilcar (Kenscoff), Dominique St Roc (Pétion-ville), Youri Chevry (Port-au-Prince) and Bastien Jean Voltaire, Deslien Philippe (deputy mayors of Tabarre), affirm that the fight against fatras is their first priority and they are ready to discuss with the government, all relevant state authorities and the private sector to define and implement innovative solutions to solve in a sustainable way the problem of unsanitary conditions in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince.
