Friday at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, Pope Francis received in audience President Jovenel Moïse accompanied by his wife Martine and member of the Haitian delegation.

In the Tronetto Hall, President Moïse and the Pope exchanged their first handshake before going to the Papal Library for their interview.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the two men spoke of the interest of the good relations between the Holy See and Haiti, the common desire to strengthen collaboration to solve various social problems, particularly those affect the young, the poor and the most vulnerable, reflecting the significant contribution the Church makes to the country in the areas of education, health and charity.

They also raised issues of national and regional interest, paying particular attention to the persistent problem of emigration and the importance of dialogue to promote social cohesion and the common good.

After his audience with Pope Francis and his meeting with Mgr Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary of State Jovenel Moïse declared on Friday, "My meeting with Pope Francis is proof of the strengthening of friendship between Haiti and The Vatican.I am honored to exchange with the Holy Father on topics relating to the development of Haiti and the future of our country's relations with the Holy See."

President Moïse will return home on Sunday from his tour of Italy started on January 25th.
