Haiti - Environment : Haiti prepares for the International Conference on Climate Change
As a prelude to its participation in the International Conference on Climate Change in Bonn, (Germany, from April 30 to May 10, 2018) part of the future Haitian delegation, composed of Nicole Yolette Altidor, Director General of the Ministry of the Environment, James Cadet, Director of the Climate Change Department and Yves Bernard Remarais, Head of the Communications Department, participates from April 24 to 29 in a preparatory session on strategies to be put in place to better negotiate during the Conference, the interests of countries more exposed to the effects of climate change, such as Haiti.

Note that at the conference in Bonn, will take place the 48th Ordinary Session of the organs of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 5th meeting of the first session of the Special Working Group on the Paris Agreement. During this intersessional meeting, aspects related to monitoring the implementation of the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol and the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement will be addressed.

To date, progress has been made on the development of modalities, procedures and guidelines. However, because of the scale of the damage caused by global warming, it is urgent to make considerable progress in defining the rules to be adopted. In addition, in the context of the facilitation dialogue provided for in the Paris Agreement, this conference will also be the occasion for the first exchanges on the progress made towards achieving the objective of limiting the increase of the global average temperature.

Let us recall that the Haitian delegation, alongside other countries and small island developing States, will continue to defend :

  • The irreversibility of the commitments made under the Paris Agreement (COP 21) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-17231-haiti-environment-dieuseul-desras-to-the-signing-ceremony-of-the-paris-agreement-cop21.html , progress of climate action before 2020 and improved accessibility for LDCs to different funding mechanisms;
  • The need to enhance mitigation ambitions to achieve the Paris Agreement objective and the full and effective implementation of Article 8 of the Loss and Damage Agreement ;
  • Respect for the commitments of developed countries to supply the Green Climate Fund with 100 billion US from 2020, Respect for the commitments of developed countries to supply the Green Climate Fund with 100 billion US from 2020, as well as the implementation of nationally determined contributions, and technical and financial support for adaptation, research , innovation, technology transfer and capacity building.
