Haiti - FLASH : New landslides, rivers in flood, the situation worsen

For the fifth consecutive day, the Permanent Secretariat for Risk Management, together with Haiti's Hydro-meteorological Unit (UHM) and the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC), maintained on Sunday the flood and landslide warning. 6 departments are particularly concerned by the rains: South, Nippes, Grand-Anse, North, North-East and Artibonite. The provisional record of the last rains has risen to 3 deaths, two women and one girl, one missing man and one wounded

On Saturday, 2 new landslides were reported in Port-au-Prince. The first destroyed two houses and damaged two others in Turgeau (Ravine Georges). The second occurred at Carrefour-Feuilles (Pingué) where two houses were destroyed and two others damaged. No casualties have been reported.

Sunday at midday, several rivers were in flood especially in the Great South, while it continues to rain on the majority of the departments of the country. The Ravine du Sud has started to overflow and the Civil Protection structures have reminded residents of the urgency to move to safer places.

Southeast : Several rivers are in flood, in particular the Moreau river, commune of Bainet, the Gosselin and the Petite Rivière, with Jacmel, but also Fesles, to Marigot.

In Jacmel, the waters of the Petite Rivière, which crosses the community of Sable Cabaret, carried away a man and a woman. The body of this last was found dead, this Sunday morning in Baguette, a locality of the communal section La Montagne. Research is underway to find the missing man.

The floods of several rivers have caused damage: trees torn, damaged houses and losses of goats in Bainet at the 8th Orange section.

South : The Ravine du Sud, Acul, the Torbeck River and other streams are still in flood. The Ravine du Sud begins to overflow. Runoff has eroded several roads, including on the urban centers. A landslide was recorded at the habitation Avezac, in the third communal section of Camp-Perrin.

Due to the weather situation, the DPC and local authorities call on the population, especially inhabitants of areas at risk of flooding and landslides, to avoid long journeys, to stay away from water points low and rivers and especially not to cross under any circumstances rivers in flood. Those living on mountainsides, on unstable terrain, already flooded with water and in flood areas, must evacuate for their safety.
