Haiti - Agriculture : Towards a good spring campaign

According to the latest observations in Haiti of the "Famine Early Warning Systems Network" (FEW NET), current agricultural activities announce a good spring campaign.

The rainy season began in April or May in most areas. In cumulative terms, the showers are close to normal and the soil moisture level is sufficient for sprouting and growing crops. Soils are already prepared, farmers have proceeded to their sowing, especially in the low northwest, the upper Artibonite and in the Nippes, prey to dry episodes until early April.

Income sources for the poorest households are returning to their usual level. These sources of income are diverse and are currently composed of local agricultural labor and in the Dominican Republic, diaspora transfers and petty trading, among others.

Markets are mostly supplied with imported products. Prices are high and likely to increase due to the announced adjustment in the price of fuel and the depreciation of the exchange rate.

Some communes in the North-East and Haut-Plateau are still in crisis (Phase 3 of the CPI), the rest of the country being in a minimal situation or in stress (Phases 1 and 2 of the CPI). If the current campaign succeeds, improving food availability and accessibility, areas in crisis or stress may change phase.
